- Black Voices releases Toolbar, Desktop App, and Email ServiceToday
-
AOL Black Voices, the leading online destination for African-American, is far from satisfied with their steadily increasing year-over-year growth. Today we noticed Black Voices released a toolbar, desktop application, and email service (yes another email service), that allows users to read and access Black Voices’ content no matter where they are or what they’re doing on the computer .
The Firefox, IE, and Flock supported toolbar has a scrolling listing of Black Voices’ headlines, quick buttons to celebrity pictures, Black Voices news, and message boards. Users can also customize their toolbar with additional buttons from major websites including YouTube, Myspace, Amazon, and Facebook. The toolbar by default is powered by AOL of course, but other search options include the ability to search Black Voices article, video, message board. With very little buzz the toolbar is less controversial and under the radar in comparison to 40A Inc’s black targeted web browser Blackbird.
Black Voices desktop application. How can I put this? If you’d like to save time and give your fingers a break from typing “www.blackvoices.com” and simply click a button from your desktop t

- “Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em”…The CartoonToday
-
Web 2.0 rap performer Soulja Boy has more than made a name for himself using alternative media. Whether it’s his smash single “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” or his new foray into the video game arena, he is more than able to make a name for himself that’s permanently etched into today’s pop culture. His newest project is “Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em: The Animated Series”, a 2D/3D cartoon hybrid that’s a little bit South Park and a little bit Southwest Atlanta.
Following in the footsteps of Andre 3000, M.C. Hammer, and Kid ‘n’ Play, the premiere cartoon webisode walks us through the titular artist’s return to high school and his antics with his friends the S.O.D. Money Crew, his sidecar’d Segway, and getting cheap shots on his principal played by Alfonso Ribiero (famously known from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”). The soundtrack is set to his song “Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em”, a song which critiques detractors to his music and image. In the video, Soulja Boy performs in a school talent show, sells gear with his name emblazoned on it, shows up some unnamed bully, and at the end, makes it rain off a bridge.
While I can admire his seemingly unending aplomb into such a hit-or-miss arena (even the aforementioned artists’ series had short season runs), I wonder how this adds into the overall Soulja Boy brand or his fan base. The series will consist only of web video and will primarily be available via his Youtube channel, which means that the show can be released on a quicker schedule than if it were on a broadcast channel. Also, the record label would be able to get a better idea of its popularity through clickthroughs and web views than Nielsen ratings.
The series begins in late January. For more information, visit Soulja Boy’s webpage at http://www.tellem.tv.

-
I’m having a hard time figuring out what makes the new online version of Honey magazine worth a $10 million dollar investment. Sure, the re-emergence of Honey in an online only format will no doubt be popular among fans of the old print edition and those new to the Honey brand. Sahara Media has the necessary steps to ensure honeymag.com and the affiliated hivespot.com social network will be dynamic and of high quality. Sahara purchased full rights to the Honey brand, brought on former Vibe Associate Editor Shanel Odum as it’s Editor-in-Chief, and managed to obtain $10 million dollars in private investments to use at its disposal.
But what kind of return do investors expect to make on their investment, if any?
The website and social network’s four components will include community, communication, career, and connection. The hivespot.com website also makes note of a “virtual closet” and “access to incredible offers on clothes, cosmetics, gadgets, music, and more,” with free access. This essentially means the site will offer content, social networking, job listings, the ability to sell third party merchandise, and sponsorships. This means it will make its mon
- CES 2009: Ludacris releases first Rap HDS Blu-ray albumJanuary 7
-
Not only will I interview Stevie Wonder this Saturday but I’ll also nabbed an exclusive interview with “Mr. Chicken & Beer” himself, Grammy-award winning artist Ludacris. The Atlanta-bred rapper’s new album “Theater of the Mind” will experiment with a new technology called HDS (High Definition Sound) which is basically a higher fidelity of surround sound that isolates Luda’s voice and his instrumentals in a way that makes every single note clear.
Here’s Ludacris on what he felt like when he first heard an album using HDS:
As soon as I heard the High Definition Surround (HDS) demo they sent over, I was like “Whoa, this is what I want for my album!” It was an opportunity to make history, the first rap record to be released in HDS, and I always want to be pushing into new things.
His album will not only be released on CD but in special BluRay format but more on that to come. We have 1-on-1 exclusive video with him that we are editing right now. That will be available in it’s entirety later.
