Arlene M. Woodbridge

August 29, 1946 - December 25, 2008

My Mom hadn’t been feeling well since last summer. She had no energy, was tired all of the time, and couldn’t eat. She was terrible about going to the doctor so she didn’t go for a long time. She finally went and had a ton of tests but they couldn’t pinpoint what was wrong with her. About 7 weeks ago, she was unable to breathe and was hospitalized. At that point they found a mass in her lung and she was diagnosed with lung cancer. After she got out of the hospital she was placed on medical leave from work and my brother John took care of her.

For almost all of November I was waiting for a call to tell me to come immediately. But Mom started to do better and John said I should just plan on coming for Christmas as I originally intended.

On Monday December 22nd my Mom was readmitted to the hospital after a very diff

Opa's Trophies (by amanky)

Well, I am very behind as I was out of town a couple of days longer than I originally planned. I thought I would enjoy limited Internet and cell phone access but it was really hard.

I also has a very difficult trip, which I might discuss tomorrow, and it’s going to take me a bit to get back into my normal routine.

Anyway ….

The winner of the Twitter Holiday Contest is…

Rebecca from Does This Blog Make Us Look Fat. Ironically enough, Rebecca was also the very first person to enter the contest. I will be emailing Rebecca and the other entrants later today.

5 Simple WordPress ThemesDecember 31 2008

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. 135/365 (by Manuela Hoffmann)

Now that the chaos of the holidays is starting to wind down I thought it would be good to return to simplicity with 5 Simple WordPress themes.

If you like your site to look clean with a lot of white space; to be simple, then these are the themes for you.

As per my usual disclaimer I have not tested any of these themes. My opinion is based solely on appearance and aesthetics.

Holiday Fun - My Top 10 Celebrity Crushes Through the YearsDecember 24 2008

Well, I’m away on vacation and I thought I would leave you with a silly holiday gift - my celebrity crushes through the years. I’m not saying they are good looking and I can’t always explain why but these are the famous people that I’ve had a thing for - some of them I still do. I’m not saying that I have good taste either ;-)

1. Johnny Cash - I don’t actually remember having a crush on Johnny Cash. When I was 3-4 years old, Johnny Cash has a television program and my Mom said I was mesmerized by it. It would come on and I would get all excited and say “Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash.” I might have just liked his deep voice. I was also obsessed with Marlo Thomas on That Girl at this time, so I’m not sure it really qualifies as a crush but I’m going to count it anyway.

5 WordPress Citrus ThemesDecember 22 2008

Orange Tree (by Steve Webel)

I’m not sure why this is but there are an unusually high number of WordPress themes with Citrus in their name. It seems that whenever green, yellow or orange are used that oranges, grapefruit and limes pop into the theme creator’s mind.

So, as I started noticing this assortment if fruity themes, I decided to collect them and highlight this naming oddity.

This is NOT a personal recommendation of these themes. At least one of them could easily be added to my article about ugly WordPress themes.

Anyway, maybe some extra citrus is needed during this dark time of year, especially for those of us who live in cold climates. And now I’m thinking about how grandparents would tell me that they would only get an orange for Christmas. That seems so sad until you think about globalization and buying locally. If you lived in say Canada, you certainly wouldn’t have had access to citrus in December, if ever.
