Broadcasting Brain

An uncanny blog by Mark Dykeman

Twitter really IS my other blog plus a microblogging tipNovember 16

Continuing with verse 2 of yesterday’s Twitter riff

Twitter has become my personal blog/link sharing system/babble stream/socialization tool. It really IS my second blog. I still have my old semi-personal blog lying around but lately I’ve only been using it for emergencies like when my hosting company lets me down.

Broadcasting Brain isn’t a personal blog, not by a long shot. It’s my flagship, my fortress, my embassy, and my broadcasting station.

Twitter, on the other hand, is…

Where else would I get into fun exchanges with the likes of Geoff Livingston or Loren Feldman?

And/or babbling on like this? (I don’t know if these will come through properly in an RSS reader or not):

twitter chatter 1

Yeah, I don’t think that a lot of stuff would fit here, although it is missing a lot of the context so some of it might be hard to follow. But the tone is de

The easiest blog to maintain. Ever.November 15

It doesn’t get any easier than this:

Twitter is my other blog

Twitter is the new (or replacement) web log.

Links, short commentary, etc. And very easy to use.

Do you agree? If not, why not?

If you enjoyed this post, please consider (but don't feel obligated...) leaving a tip to help fund the activities of this blog.

The potentially disappointing Broadcasting Brain monetization postNovember 14

I am going to attempt to monetize this blog.

[waits for the angry and disappointed to unsubscribe]

Why am I taking this step?

  1. To fund various social media activities, including the blog itself. That includes better hosting, domain registration, potential graphic design/blog template changes, books, courses, etc.
  2. In relation to 1, I’d like to start attending some related conferences and events (hell, any decent conference, but it would be cool to go to Blog World Expo or Gnomedex someday!).That’s kind of difficult for me to do at present and it just doesn’t fit into my day job. At all.
  3. Other blog marketing/promotional stuff that I’ve been thinking about.
  4. Reserving the right for other ideas that I haven’t thought of or haven’t described yet. I’m going to give myself some flexibility here.

There are some principles that I’m going to follow when monetizing:

  1. Any form of monetization cannot ruin the performance of this blog in your Web browser/RSS reader/E-Mail, e.g. loading times.
  2. If a monetization idea is unreasonably annoying or obtrusive, it’s not going to happen. If I catch that before it goes live, it won’t happen. If I discover these problems after it goes live, t
What content do YOU read for pleasure?November 14

I’ve been writing a lot about things like self esteem, self actualization, and creative infrastructure, which are things that focus on content creation. Today, I’m curious about something else.

What content do you read for pleasure? Assuming that you have the time…

Do you read non-fiction (business, current affairs, productivity, self-help, hobbies, etc.)?

Do you read fiction (general, western, historical, fantasy, science fiction, etc.)?

I’m particularly interested in hearing about what social media enthusiasts (pro or amateur) are consuming.

In my case, I’m reading a lot of business, self-development, and productivity stuff, but I continue to enjoy fantasy and science fiction. I keep up on what’s happening in the mainstream comic book world even though I don’t actually buy many comics these days (if at all).

Please share your thoughts in the comments section!

Pen and paper are a must for effective editingNovember 13

Write it outBetween the green movement and the habits of the mobile computing device age, there’s a growing movement against the unnecessary use of paper.

Let’s state that a different way: more and more people think it’s evil to use paper documents.

Even though paper comes from a renewable resource, there are many downsides to the process of making paper, including pollution, clutter, and garbage.

When it comes to writing (and computing in general), more and more people are getting in the habit of doing everything on a computer screen: writing, editing, and reading.

As a member of Generation X, I spent many, many years both handwriting and using a typewriter to create documents. Every single assignment that I did in high school was done by hand. 90% of the assignments that I did in university were either done by hand or on an electric typewriter.

I use a heck of a lot of paper at work, too. I’m not proud of this, it’s just the habit that I’ve developed.

I’m trying to cut back on my use of paper, at least a little bit, but it’s not going away.

Here’s the thing: I do my best document editing on paper.

I’m doing a little experimen
