Can I Sell That Photo??September 29 2008

You and your best friends just got tickets to see your favorite band in concert.Being the photographer you are, naturally you want to bring along your camera. But can you do that?If you can, and you get an awesome shot of the singer, can you sell it?The answer is probably not, but knowing why will help you understand what kind of photos you can sell from any event you attend.

What kind of Event?

An easy rule of thumb is if you paid money to get into a venue, there’s a good chance that someone else may control whether you can take photos, and if you can, how you may use them. The various rights owners may include the physical venue itself, the local promoter, the national promoter, and the person or entity itself. That sounds like a real mess already doesn’t it?Well, that’s because it is.This sort of thing is hard to talk about in the abstract, so instead I’ll give some more concrete examples. But keep in mind this is talking about selling photos yourself, which is very different than photos for news/editorial purpose.

This should be pretty familiar to everyone.A typical concert has three main rights holders – the venue, the promoter, and t

RAW vs. JPEG Part 3 - RAW EditingSeptember 26 2008

So you’ve decided to try your hand at shooting in RAW – tempted by the higher image quality and control and not turned off by file sizes and editing/download times. Congrats!!!! You can see part 1: Raw vs. JPEG What are They? of this series and Part 2: Raw vs JPEG Pro’s and Cons.

Getting Started

If you are going to start shooting RAW, don’t start at an important occasion when you really need to get good images (i.e. a wedding). Try it out first and get familiar with how one processes RAW files before trying it with important images.Like any aspect of photography, you have to experiment a little to get the best out of it.

Software

To really take advantage of RAW you have to have a quality RAW converter which may require spending some money. Lightroom is a good choice, as is Aperture if you’re on a Mac.Both of these programs are widely used by pro photographers, and you really can’t go wrong with either option.

Editing Watch-Outs

Another issue with RAW files is that image editing programs that come out in the future may not be able to read RAW files from today’s (and past) digital cameras. This is because every camera manufacturer’s RAW format is slightly

11 Ways to Get Inspiration for Your PhotographySeptember 25 2008

So what happens when you run out of ideas and can’t think of anything to take pictures of?? How do you find things you haven’t photographed 1,000 times before. Here are 11 ways to give you new inspiration and ways to bring life to your photography.

  1. A Photo a Day Challenge: Challenge yourself to take a photo a day for 3 months and post it to a daily blog. These photos should be beyond your comfort zone. Study areas that you do not normally shoot. For example, if you take landscape photography, shoot people’s faces. If you are a stock photographer, shoot a landscape. If you are an industrial photographer, take pictures of flowers. This is a great way to grow as a photographer, and you may discover inspiration in a whole new way. pentaxfan
  2. Carry your Camera EVERYWHERE: Always keep your eyes open. If your camera is on hand you can capture potential photographs you encounter throughout everyday life. You will soon train your eyes to see pictures everywhere. If you are going to the mall, bring your camera. Running errands? Bring your camera. Don’t leave home without it. DuckBrown and jerrydeese
  3. Shoot on a Macro Scale: You can always find something interesting to shoot when you look at subjects on a
Where We’ve Been - We’re Baaaack!!September 25 2008

This post is a slight deviation from the normal hyperphocal content of educational and inspirational (we hope) articles about photography. I’m sure that many of you are wondering what the heck is going on over here? After months of daily posts filled with photography goodness September has been….. well……. sparse.

First - the reason….. Hyperphocal is a photography blog created by Photrade…. and Photrade has been growing and busy. We hosted the Aperture Nature Photography Contest, opened our doors to the public at DEMO and caught up with some of you at Blog World Expo.  Here are some photos below….

7 Tips for Organizing your PhotosSeptember 15 2008

Where is that photo of!?!?!??!!!! I still can’t find it!!!!!! With the advent of digital cameras photographers can take virtually unlimited photos…… but how do you find the right photo just when you need it? Finding a specific image can sometimes be frustrating, especially when you have a lot of photos.Following some of the simple tips on this list will make your images quick and easy to find.

1.The more photos you have on your computer the more important it is to organize them in a way that makes sense to you.If you remember photographs based on the date or subject organize them into folders based on that.

1. Dates - I took that last summer - I remember what I photographed based on the date I took the photos. For example:I know in July of 2007 I photographed in Utah and therefore I placed my images in a folder labeled “2007-07-25”.If I have a large amount of images taken over multiply days of the same subject, I’ll typically place them in a folder with the date the last images were taken on.

2. Develop a system so you can search by more than one cue - For those who better remember photos based on a subject a simple but descriptive label is important, such as “Utah_Trip_Landscapes”.You can even combine the two methods to create a label like “UtahTrip_2007_July”.The possibilities are
